Ingredients
Scale
Sweet Potato Layer
- 2 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and sliced
- 1 cup fresh cranberries
Cream Mixture
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- Salt and pepper to taste
Topping
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking the gratin.
- Boil Sweet Potatoes: Boil the peeled and sliced sweet potatoes in water for 10-15 minutes until they become tender. Then drain well to remove excess water.
- Layer Sweet Potatoes: Grease a baking dish and layer half of the boiled sweet potato slices evenly at the bottom.
- Add Cranberries: Evenly sprinkle half of the fresh cranberries over the first layer of sweet potatoes to add a tart contrast.
- Prepare and Pour Cream Mixture: In a bowl, combine the heavy cream, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, and pepper. Stir well and pour half of this mixture over the layered sweet potatoes and cranberries.
- Repeat Layers: Repeat the layering process with the remaining sweet potatoes, cranberries, and cream mixture to build the gratin.
- Add Toppings: Evenly sprinkle the shredded Gruyère cheese and breadcrumbs on top for a crunchy, cheesy finish.
- Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the gratin to cool for a few minutes before serving to let it set and enhance the flavors.
Notes
- Boiling the sweet potatoes before baking ensures even cooking and soft texture.
- Gruyère cheese adds a nutty and creamy flavor that complements the sweetness of the potatoes.
- Fresh cranberries bring a tart contrast that balances the sweetness.
- You can substitute breadcrumbs with crushed pecans or walnuts for added texture.
- For a lighter version, use half-and-half instead of heavy cream.
- Make sure to not overcook the sweet potatoes during boiling to avoid them becoming mushy.
