These beautifully spiced biscuit place tags are perfect for adding a personal touch to your holiday table or special gatherings. Made with a buttery dough infused with cinnamon and cardamom, these biscuits are cut into pretty shapes, baked until golden, and decorated with royal icing that can be personalized with names or messages. The recipe ensures a delightful crisp texture and festive aroma, making them both a charming decoration and a delicious treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Dough Ingredients

  • 100g butter
  • 60g caster sugar
  • 160g plain flour, plus extra for dusting
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼½ tsp ground cardamom
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Royal Icing

  • 100g royal icing sugar
  • Few drops of food colouring (optional)
  • 23 tsp water (for mixing with icing sugar)

Instructions

  1. Make the Dough: Place the butter, caster sugar, plain flour, ground cinnamon, and ground cardamom in a food processor. Pulse until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Add the egg yolk and vanilla extract, then pulse again until the dough comes together in a smooth ball. Wrap the dough well and refrigerate for up to three days or freeze for up to three months.
  2. Roll Out and Cut Shapes: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to the thickness of a £1 coin (approximately 2-3mm). Use biscuit cutters to cut out shapes about 8-10cm wide, suitable for writing on. Transfer the cut biscuits onto baking sheets lined with baking parchment, spacing them well apart. Chill the baking sheets in the fridge for 15 minutes to firm up the dough.
  3. Bake the Biscuits: Preheat the oven to 180°C (160°C fan) or gas mark 4. Bake the biscuits for 12-15 minutes or until the edges are golden. Once baked, cool the biscuits on the baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  4. Prepare the Icing and Decorate: Mix the royal icing sugar with 2-3 teaspoons of water to create a thick, stiff paste. Add food colouring drops if desired. Transfer the icing to a piping bag fitted with a very small round nozzle. Pipe decorative borders around the biscuits and write names or messages in the center. Allow the icing to set for 2-3 hours before serving or using as place tags.

Notes

  • The dough can be made ahead and stored in the fridge or freezer to save time on baking day.
  • Adjust the amount of cardamom according to your taste preference as it can be quite strong.
  • If you do not have a food processor, you can rub the butter into the flour mixture by hand, then mix in the wet ingredients.
  • To avoid spreading, chilling the dough before baking is essential.
  • Use a small piping tip for neat, precise icing decoration.
  • These biscuits make wonderful edible place cards for parties and festive meals.
