  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ¾ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¾ teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients and Brownie Batter

  • 1 ½ cups (300g) granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup (170g) unsalted butter, melted and cooled slightly
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (240ml) buttermilk
  • 1 cup (170g) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup (70g) chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

Frosting

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups (360g) powdered sugar
  • ½ cup (60g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ cup (120ml) milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Orange food coloring gel (optional)
  • Green food coloring gel (optional)
  • Black food coloring gel (optional)

Decorations

  • Halloween sprinkles (various colors and shapes)
  • Miniature candy corn
  • Small gummy worms
  • Pretzel sticks
  • Miniature chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prepare pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan and line the bottom with parchment paper to ensure easy removal of the brownies.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
  3. Cream sugar and butter: In a separate bowl, cream together the granulated sugar and melted butter until the mixture is smooth and slightly glossy.
  4. Add eggs and vanilla: Beat in the eggs one at a time, ensuring each is fully incorporated before adding the next. Stir in the vanilla extract for flavor.
  5. Combine dry and wet ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined to avoid overmixing.
  6. Add chocolate chips and nuts: Fold in the semi-sweet chocolate chips and, if using, chopped pecans or walnuts evenly throughout the batter.
  7. Pour and bake: Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread it out evenly. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs attached.
  8. Cool completely: Allow the brownies to cool completely in the pan to ensure the frosting will spread smoothly and not melt.
  9. Prepare frosting: In a large bowl, beat the softened butter until it becomes light and fluffy. Gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder, alternating with milk, and beat until the frosting is smooth and creamy. Stir in vanilla extract to enhance flavor.
  10. Color the frosting: Divide the frosting evenly into three bowls. Add orange, green, and black food coloring gels to separate bowls, mixing thoroughly to achieve vibrant colors.
  11. Decorate brownies: Once the brownies have completely cooled, frost them using the different colored frostings. Use a spatula or piping bag to create spooky swirls or sections.
  12. Add Halloween decorations: Decorate the frosted brownies with Halloween sprinkles, miniature candy corn, gummy worms, pretzel sticks, and miniature chocolate chips to create a festive look perfect for the season.

Notes

  • For easier cleanup and removal, line your baking pan with parchment paper before greasing.
  • Do not overmix the batter to keep brownies moist and tender.
  • Allow brownies to cool completely before frosting to prevent the frosting from melting.
  • Customize decorations to your liking with other Halloween-themed candies or edible items.
  • You can omit nuts if you have allergies or prefer nut-free brownies.
