Description
Classic waffles are a beloved breakfast treat featuring a crispy golden exterior and a fluffy interior. Made with simple pantry ingredients like self-raising flour, eggs, milk, and butter, these waffles are quick to prepare and perfect for serving with maple syrup or icing sugar. The recipe allows for customization such as using only the egg yolk for extra fluffiness or folding in whipped egg whites for a lighter texture.
Ingredients
Scale
Waffle Batter
- 1 egg
- 225g self-raising flour
- 1 tbsp golden caster sugar (optional)
- 250ml milk
- 50g butter, melted and cooled
- ½ tsp vanilla extract (optional)
- 1 tbsp sunflower or vegetable oil
To Serve
- Maple syrup (optional)
- Icing sugar (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare Batter: Crack the egg into a large bowl. For fluffier waffles, separate and use only the yolk at this stage. Add the self-raising flour and a generous pinch of salt, then stir in the golden caster sugar if using. Gradually whisk in the milk followed by the melted and cooled butter until the batter is smooth. Whisk in the vanilla extract if desired.
- Whip Egg Whites (Optional): If you want an especially light and fluffy texture, whisk the egg white to soft peaks and carefully fold it into the batter instead of mixing fully. Alternatively, you can blend all ingredients together with a blender for convenience.
- Preheat Waffle Maker: Heat your waffle maker according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Lightly brush the plates with sunflower or vegetable oil to prevent sticking.
- Cook Waffles: Pour enough batter to cover the surface of the waffle maker. Cook for about 5-6 minutes or until the waffles are golden brown and crisp. Timing may vary based on your appliance.
- Serve Warm: Serve the waffles immediately topped with maple syrup and/or a dusting of icing sugar. Alternatively, keep them warm in a low oven while you finish cooking the rest.
Notes
- For fluffier waffles, use only egg yolks in the batter and fold in whipped egg whites separately.
- The batter can be blended in a blender or hand blender for quicker preparation.
- Batter can be made 1-2 hours in advance and kept chilled in the refrigerator.
- Use a waffle iron with non-stick plates and follow your appliance instructions for best results.
- Optionally flavor the batter with vanilla extract and sweeten with golden caster sugar according to taste.
- Waffles are best eaten fresh but can be kept warm in an oven set to low heat until serving.
